Speech Competition

This afternoon, we went to a speech competition.

First we sat down with our teachers and our class. Some families were there too.

Next, the speeches started. Each class chose a person who was brave and had a strong voice to talk. Stage 1 talked about their best, special day, K-Swan spoke their favourite food, and K-Darling talked about their families.

Then, Mrs Mortimer spoke.

Finally we were finished. K-Darling went back to their room to write this!

Speeches

Sometimes people have to talk about something that is important to them, in front of other people. This is called a speech. Watch the speeches below and see what things they do well, and what things they might need to practice. You could use S1-Amazon’s Speech Rubric to help you.

Opinions and Reasons

An opinion is what you think or feel about something. A reason is why you think or feel that way. A ‘big’ word for a reason is a  justification. Here are some examples of our opinions about the fairy tale Red Riding hood.

I think Little Red Riding Hood will feed her Grandma because she has some cookies.”

I think that Little Red Riding Hood should know it’s the wolf because it looks like a wolf not a person!”

I think Little Red Riding Hood is feeling scared because the wolf is not her Grandmother.”

I think the big bad wolf will eat Grandma because he is hungry and thirsty,”

I think the Big Bad Wolf will eat Grandma and Little Red Riding Hood, because he has sharp teeth.

I think the wolf is angry because he is showing his big teeth.”

What makes a speech memorable?

Here are some examples of children giving speeches. They may be good or bad, but what I want you to think about is what makes them memorable – that is, makes you remember them. These memorable parts may be things you can include in speeches you do at school. Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
