Pop Art

Pop art is a style of artwork created in the 1950’s which uses bright and brash colours to draw everyday items. It is inspired by comic strips, advertising, and popular entertainment.

A famous pop artist was Andy Warhol. His most famouos artworks were of Marilyn Monroe and of some cans of soup! We will be using his style to make some artworks of food, just like the following artist who calls herself the Pop Art Diva.

Zebra Crossings

This week, we started learning about road safety. We learned how one of the safest places to cross a road is at a zebra crossing. It’s called that, because of the black and white stripes. We still have to make sure we Stop, Look, and Listen, just in case, because drivers might do something unexpected, and not see us.

Here are some funny pictures of zebra crossings – they are a little different!

Amazon River Photos

Look at these pictures of the Amazon River. What do you notice that’s the same between the pictures? What’s different? What do you like/dislike? What can you tell me about colours, light and shapes in these pictures?

Leaves

The floor of a rainforest is too dark for many plants to grow here. It is instead covered in all the leaves that fall from the larger trees. These leaves gradually break down (decompose) until they become the thin layer of nutrient rich soil that nourishes the rainforest. Be inspired by these beautiful photographs and artworks of fallen leaves.

Weekly Wonderful Website: T3W2

To start off our rainforest theme, why not try creating your own jungle in the style of Henri Rousseau. Students in my class last year might remember this artist inspiring us to make some camouflaged animals hiding behind the leaves.

National Reconciliation Week

Last week was National Reconciliation Week. It’s all about building mutually respectful relationships between Indigenous (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders) and other Australians to help people work together to solve problems and help each other. Reconciliation involves learning about Indigenous history and culture, making positive attitudes, correcting misunderstandings based on myths, and encouraging action to improve relationships.

Enjoy this traditional Aboriginal dreaming about two boys who go camping and get more than they bargained for! It’s from the Ngiyaampaa people of Western New South Wales. It includes a goanna called Koochard and a pair of kookaburras.

Rangoli Designs for Diwali

Diwali is called the festival of lights in India. On the third day of Diwali, the festival that marks the end of the Hindu year, Lakshmi is honored. Lakshmi represents good fortune and wealth.

The Rangoli is a sign of welcome. These drawings may be geometric patterns, drawings of Diwa lights (single-flamed lamps), or pictures of symbols. For example, lotus flowers symbolize purity and perfection. Rangoli designs are usually symmetrical and geometrical and can be designed easily using grid paper.

Indian Peacocks

The beautiful peacock is the national animal of India. It has a royal blue body and head, with a crest above it’s head. The male has a stunning tale (also called a train) of irridescent green or blue-green feathers covered in a series of eyes visible when the tail is fanned. The female has a mixture of dull green, brown, and grey in her plumage. She lacks the long upper tail feathers of the male but still has a crest.

Sakura Matsuri (Japan)

‘Sakura Matsuri’ is the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival. It happens in April when the Cherry Blossom trees begin to bloom. This is a time the start of a new year for students and businesses, so Cherry Blossom trees make people think of new beginnings.

Families often make trips around Japan just to see the Cherry Blossoms bloom. They have special parties called ‘hanami’ in parks and gardens just to look at the flowers. Some towns have big festivals to celebrate the beautiful Cherry Blossoms.
